Project Summary

NSW1 Horsley Parks Bioenergy will be Australia’s first industrial-scale bioenergy project to create Renewable Gas Behind the Meter for industrial manufacturing.

Objective

The bioenergy facility will be co-located with Brickworks' existing brick manufacturing operations in Horsley Park and will have a processing capacity of 120,000 tonnes per annum of source-separated organic waste, with approval for up to 150,000 tonnes per annum. This will produce approximately 253,000 GJ of renewable gas (biomethane) annually, representing a 50.5% reduction in Scope 1 emissions for the brick kiln through displacing natural gas.   The facility will utilise a closed-loop system, treating odours through a biological scrubber and employing Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units to generate renewable heat and electricity to power the plants, reducing grid electricity dependence.

Key Actions

    • Australia’s first behind-the-meter application of anaerobic digestion and biomethane upgrade technologies for a hard-to-abate manufacturing plant
    • Supports the growth of the renewables and organics recycling sectors with respect to modernized and sustainable development practices.
    • Creates local jobs and supports regional supply chains
    • Shares learnings to support industry growth
